Even (Petraeus) says the Sunni Awakening is at least as responsible as any other cause for the reduction of violence in Iraq... now Maliki’s people say they’re ready to throw the Awakening under the reconcilliation bus and declare it illegal - perhaps as early as November 1st.

You can bet the Awakening folks won’t be thrilled about it and... express their displeasure by returning to violent insurgency. McCain’s beloved Surge won’t have accomplished a lasting reduction, and Bush will have already committed the U.S. to substantial withdrawal. [...]

Will the establishment media notice as Republicans do another 180 and claim that the prospect of renewed violence means the U.S. must stay in Iraq (just as the almost certainly temporary reduction in violence meant the U.S. must stay in Iraq?)"
