And you've already heard that the RNC's employees health care has covered abortion since 1991, but Michael Steele is getting that removed from the health plan now that it's news....

Maybe there's something that I've been missing here with this Stupak amendment.

From what I understand: it disallows people from purchasing supplemental insurance for non-medically-necessary abortion coverage if they are to be using federally-provided affordability credits in order to do so.

Never in my life have I ever had any insurance coverage that covered non-medically-necessary abortions. NEVER. I haven't had any insurance coverage that covered ANYTHING that wasn't medically necessary aside from preventative care.

Furthermore... we're not talking about abortions in the cases of rape, incest, or danger to the health of the mother. Those are covered in any insurance plan, and not barred with this amendment.

So what the hell is the uproar about? That people can't use the public option or affordability credits to purchase coverage above and beyond the standard that the majority of Americans have in their employer-provided plans?

Again, is there something I'm missing here? Because what I'm seeing is the equivalent of no federal money being allowed to fund nose jobs.
jblaque From: [info]jblaque Date: November 14th, 2009 10:46 pm (UTC) (Permalink)
1) There are several medical plans that currently cover elective abortion. In fact, the Republicans were offering such plans to their employees as of a few days ago when word got out.

2) Before Stupak was added, HR 3962 originally allowed funding abortions in two ways: Directly through the government-run option and by allowing the affordability credits the government would give to consumers to be used to pay for health care plans that cover elective abortions. The Stupak amendment applies the fundamental principles of the Hyde Amendment, which has long prohibited abortion funding under the Medicaid and HHS programs, to the health care reform bill and essentially prohibit all government funding of abortion under it. In fact, Stupak's amendment prevents any insurance plan in the health care exchanges from covering abortion procedures.

Then there's this.

Wow. That is one of the most tone-deaf things I've ever heard. Are you aware that there are tens of thousands of women every year in this country who need abortions for reasons other than rape or incest, but whose lives are at stake nonetheless? Women who are under the thumb of violent abusers, for instance, or teenagers who could be victimized or killed by a parent, or other such situations? Women who can't afford birth control, but also cannot refuse or fight off their husbands/boyfriends/whatever?

In other words, what rosy fairyland do you think women live in here? Because your nice life doesn't mean others aren't trapped in situations that make pregnancy a veritable life sentence.

I've mentioned this before, but I don't think insurance, particularly publicly funded insurance, should cover elective abortions. As a woman, and someone who, on one occasion, faced the decision myself (and wound up giving the child up for adoption), I think paying for an abortion out of pocket is a good little life lesson. It should be more of an issue than having a wart removed or a boil lanced.

I also think that folks who do stupid things that are known to adversely affect their health should pay an additional premium for their habits - like smokers and the obese or idiots who jump out of airplanes. As a smoker, I know that doing it is dumb, that it is likely to cause health problems later, etc. That responsibility is mine, and paying for it in additional premiums might give people extra incentive to live healthier lifestyles.

Does this mean my leftist card is revoked?

Do you think men should be forced to pay for their hard-on pills out of pocket? Because I think that would be a nice little life lesson for them - gee, maybe screwing at the drop of a hat isn't all there is to life!

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If we don't get our needs met, they shouldn't get theirs met, either.

Read that, because she says what I would say.

You want to give a "hard life lesson" to who, exactly? Those who are already going through a hard life lesson?

It's great you were able to *make the choice* for yourself, and give up the child for adoption, but that's not a viable option for every woman.

Word.

As a woman too, I see no point in even arguing about this.
Why should my taxpaying dollars go to someone who went OOOOPS the next morning?

If one can't cough up few hundred bucks for abortion, one should keep their legs closed, no.

Hey,

I'm going to go and sign this petition (of course) but I really want to make sure you see this about Von's book...as I just said to someone else, I have a short list of people in my head who will understand why I'm giddy about this, and you're one of them. If you know anyone in any of these places (or can forward it or repost or anything), I would be eternally grateful. I'm thrilled to death that retailers are stocking Von's book and I want them to get sales:

And now I will go back to *happy dancing*.

Maybe 2009 is lookin' up?

Here's my attitude on the whole issue. I think it is a private decision between a woman and her doctor. That includes who paid the bill.

IF I was the stupid bastard that impregnated her, I don't want to even know that she is pregnant IF she is not sure whether she is going to have a baby or an abortion. I don't want to get my hopes up, tell my family that I am going to be a father, and get a bill forwarded to me from some clinic with a note that says "Pay this, asshole!". I also don't want to get dumped, not have a clue what is going on or why, and get dragged into court a year or more later for child support for a child that I didn't even know existed. To hell with that.

That's why I say do what you want, I don't care, and I'm not paying for it.

It's your body. It's your decision. You pay for it.

You can bitch about how men want to control you and your bodies all you want. You can call them assholes or whatever is the man hating bitch phrase of the week. I'm not one of those men so fuck you. It's none of my business. Don't make it my business. Do what you want. I'm not paying for it.

Congress should shut up and stay out of the medical profession.
