Sounds like Henry II Syndrome:

"Well, when I said "who would rid me of this turbulent priest" I was speaking metaphorically. Why Sir Thomas was even my best buddy."

What boggles my mind is that they thought this sort of... hate-speech would not come back to bite them at some point.

What boggles my mind is that people are buying the bullshit excuses they're justifying their actions with.

Well, there is that as well - people tend to have a short memory. I know politics gets downright nasty but is it just me or have things since the last general election in the US become even worse than normal?

Well, yes it has.

On the right, you have people who are convinced that Obama is going to turn the U.S. into a socialist country. Or others that think he's not a U.S. citizen, or he's a sekrit muslim, or whatever. (Most of this category can be safely discounted as loudmouthed nutters.) Or people who are just plain pissed that we haven't elected Sarah Palin as Queen of the U.S. (No, I'm only slightly joking about that. In the building I live in, there are at least a handful of people who think that Palin can and has done no wrong, and it's all tricks by the liberal media to make her look bad.)

On the left.... well, the Democrats have been remarkably spineless, and given the events in Tucson, and some of them probably over-reacted a little by trying to pin all of the blame on the far right. (Don't get me wrong, I don't think all the "gun metaphors in elections" crapola helped any, but I'm not so foolish as to think it was the sole thing that set Loughner off. He's clearly had problems for some time.)

...See? I knew there was a logical explanation...
