New Project
Something I've been wanting to do for years now, finally underway...

I'm ordering these two mannequins — as lifelike a pair as I could find on a modest budget — and will be "tattooing" them, head to toe, with the same type of intricate patterns & colors I often use in my paintings & drawings...

In addition to the extensive ink & paint work, I'm also going to experiment with a variety of accoutrements, including unusual fabrics, silver jewelry, polished gemstones, string lights and whatever other materials strike my fancy.

Once completed, the pair — him seated, her standing — will be mounted on a rich, wooden base (variously embedded with black sand, white quartz gravel, crushed coral & animal bone) and uplit through a plexiglass backdrop.

After looking over a rough sketch of the finished piece, Madame & I agreed that it will look extraordinary displayed in the living room, opposite our African & Caribbean carving collection (how's that for eclectic?). I'm planning on posting a series of "work in progress" photos at various stages of construction, so please let me know if you'd like to be included on that filter...

Wish me luck!

I had no idea! Your abstracts are beautiful and your project will be fabu; I'd love to see pictures of your progress (if you decide to share the process) as well as the finished work.

On an interesting note, it appears to me that the mannequin makers have lavished loving detail on the female mannequin to a greater degree than the male. His feet and legs look rather vague compared to hers. In fact, he looks generally more like a mannequin than she does, IMO.

Might be due to the fact that most male mannequins wear long trousers, not shorts, so their legs don't have to be all that realistic since they won't be revealed. But it strikes me as one of those odd little cultural things.
jblaque From: [info]jblaque Date: January 20th, 2011 06:29 am (UTC) (Permalink)
Now that you mention it, good point. Even looking at some of the more expensive models (i.e. $250 and up), the males aren't nearly as detailed as the females, except for the face and hands.

For this project, my price cap was $150 per model, and I've only ordered the female so far (hoping I'll spot a deal on a really nice male - even if it's used)...

So it's true what they say, I guess: A good man is hard to find! :)

Oh, LOL! I love your wit, Jon Blaque!

Here's hoping a suitable model shows up, who'll work for the amount you have budgeted.

;)
