Something Wicked This Way Comes
Good advice from Chicagoland's toughest anti-gang vigilante neighborhood watch commander (and old pal), Dr. Dane:
I'm not sure how many of you have been following this as closely as I have but we're in for a potentially life-threatening blizzard/winter storm starting tomorrow evening and lasting until Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service doesn't usually use these terms to describe an event like this:

"Dangerous, multi-faceted... potentially life threatening."

Possibly freezing rain and very high winds (60 mph) and as much as one-two feet of snow by Wednesday morning. Drifting and lake effect snow could make things much worse than anything you've ever experienced before.

They could be wrong, and I hope they are, but the possibility of a crippling winter storm beginning at about 3:00 pm Tuesday exists. Please take precautions such as stocking food and water and batteries for your flashlights and radios.

The ice storm could easily bring down power lines and leave you in the dark with no heat. Make sure you've got thermal underwear, sweaters, gloves and knit caps ready should you find yourself in a dark and cold situation. The combination of ice on the power lines and trees with high winds could halt electrical service for many of us for an unknown period of time.

Remember to check on seniors in your neighborhood. Some of them might not be properly prepared to endure an extreme weather event such as this. Help them out.

I'm not trying to scare anyone about this and it might not be as bad as they're saying it could be. But I was a Boy Scout and our motto is "Be Prepared."
Stay warm & safe, kids.

P.S. One great thing about having a 17-year-old around the house: He's on shoveling duty.

Do you think it really is that HAARP stuff causing the extreme weather there? You know, how everyone was blaming HAARP for all the dead fish, birds, and scattering snakes and stuff.

IMHFO, fears about HAARP rank right up there with fears that Obama was born in Kenya.

A more likely explanation, being put forward by scientists who actually study this crap, is that the shrinking polar ice cap (it's a LOT smaller now than it should be, boys and girls) is leading to all sorts of unusual weather changes. Something about how more liquid ocean is exposed and how that throws off long-established weather patterns, etc. etc.

Memories of the 1998 ice storm that hit Quebec (and ON and NY) so hard:

Some places were without power for a fortnight, or longer. Hope you got lots of blankets and candles and heating thingies that don't need electricity....

I've lived through three "historic" Chicago blizzards - '67 (which I was too young to remember), '79 and '99. This one looks like it could be on par with any/all of them.

P.S. You should have seen all the imbeciles at the grocery store last night, scrambling around like cockroaches, hording all sorts of worthless shit they normally wouldn't think of buying...

Damned, dirty apes.

Yeah, St. Louis is pretty much closed today. We haven't gotten the super-thick coating of freezing rain that brings down trees and power lines, but something has been falling pretty much nonstop for 28 hours, and supposed to continue for at least another 14 or 16.
jblaque From: [info]jblaque Date: February 1st, 2011 07:35 pm (UTC) (Permalink)
Honestly, I don't mind being snowed in at all, so long as the power doesn't go out. We're pretty well stocked with anything we might need to get us through, e.g. Raisinets, popcorn, ginger ale, cigarettes, painkillers and frozen pizzas. :)

We won't be getting any of the sky poops here but y'all be careful, m'kay? *Hugs*

The ice is beating down like nails here. I am amazed that we've still got power.

Right now, it's -1F where I am and it's warmed a bit since the -10F it was when I got up at 7am. We got a bit of snow yesterday, not even 3", but it's *so* cold and windy, they shut down most of the city for today. Magchlor doesn't work below 10F, and the roads are horrid...no sense in risking lives if you don't have to. But, that's the weird thing - we were supposed to get buried with snow, but we didn't because it was just too damned cold. We may get some more overnight tonight. But it's still only going to be 10F tomorrow too. *ack* I'm waiting to hear if we're supposed to go in because I still won't have a laptop or network accounts til probably next week, due to all the people being out. And if there's no one going to be there for me to sit with, well, hm. I'll just read my NBU training manuals again. :D

Oh Lord, MacBeth's subbing for Thor. XP.

There are things I will never love about the Deep South. The weather is never going to be on that list.

My family is more or less confident that we won't go without power if the grid goes down due to the storm: we invested in a home backup generator that runs on natural gas from the pipeline, same as the furnace does. The generator senses when power is interrupted, and starts automatically, so we hope that that alone will protect all of our neighbors from a power outage. As everyone knows, flight insurance is what actually keeps planes from crashing, and the same goes for fancy generators that ensure electrical service independent of DTE-energy. Just having the thing means an outage will not occur.

I expect my neighbors will want to honor us with a plaque or something appropriate like that, after the storm is over and the power has stayed on regardless. We'll try to be modest about it.

Do you have a link to this fancy generator you've got? I am interested in learning more about it. I'm in the middle of the Chicago blizzard right now and am hoping that our power doesn't go out, or I'll have 5 angry cats and 2 angry dogs on my hands.

P.S. — I know this is a potentially catastrophic situation, so please excuse my flippancy above. All of this vile weather that's occurred during 2010 through now seems indicative of climate change to me, too. There doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it, either.

Well, it was a good old time while it lasted. Now the bill is coming due, and we've all been left holding the bag while the "elite" have skived off with plans to live it up...if there's anyplace left that's not too ruined by pollution and general abuse to be still worth living in.

By An Odd Coincidence

I wrote a blog entry with exactly the same title as yours - only a few hours earlier:

http://legless123.livejournal.com/127762.html

It's about the monster cyclone that's about to hit Cairns in Oz...

Cheers

Damn, that looks like it's going to be one hell of a blow...

Another friend of mine just moved out to Urbana last Summer. I'm really hoping they're paying attention to how to prepare for this shit. A lifetime in the PNW hasn't exposed them to anything even remotely comparable.

As of 8pm Tuesday, NW Ohio is holding up pretty well. The big thing in our favor right now is temps being cold enough to freeze the precip into sleet. We're avoiding any buildup on power lines right now, but things may change on Wed if it warms into mid or upper 20's as forecast. So far the cold front is holding it's own and keeping temps down.

The dog however is mindful of conditions and reluctant to do a potty run outside. He's becoming disagreeably flatulent and will probably cave in for a trip outside after making us pay for his discomfort.

I hope you are all hunkered down; looks like you are getting hammered (and not in a good way) as I write this.

We dodged the big snow this time, but it only got as high as -1f today. Might hit -21 overnight.

But we'll be back in the 40s by Friday.

Can't decide which I hate worse - deep, wet snow or bone-snapping cold...
anfalicious From: [info]anfalicious Date: February 2nd, 2011 09:29 am (UTC) (Permalink)
We've got a big'un heading for us too (not me, but I'll get the tail end of it on tuesday, which will be a serious dump of rain).

And our usually understated Bureau of Meteorology has this to say:

SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND
POSES AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA,
ESPECIALLY BETWEEN CAIRNS AND TOWNSVILLE.

And yes, this is the part of the country that's still flooded they're talking about.

(Not topping ya, just sharing storm pain)

Stay safe all!

Ours ended up being a storm in a teacup. Two towns were wiped out but no one was killed.

P.S. Not sure Madame & I are going to make it to the big game party. I'll try to let you know ASAP.

Still alive... barely. I'll be back soon, you can bet on it.

P.S. Giggity. :D
