Please click on the image and tell Congress to reauthorize vital programs that protect elephants. Reposting to your LJ, Twitter, Facebook, etc. is also appreciated...

More on the elephant poaching crisis from the IFAW, Center for Conservation Biology Guardian, Wildlife Extra and Elephant Newswire.

Left up to me, there'd be a worldwide, shoot-on-sight helicopter hunting season for poachers... I'd hang their fuckin' heads in my den with glee.

Like us, they have Grandmothers. Post reproductive females that act as both supplemental carers and living databases. A 70 year old elephant is more likely to be post-menopausal than actively fertile.

Grandmothers live to be 80 or 90, allowing them to carry memories of what to do in a once per 70 year climate catastrophe. Which seems to be the magic number for African environments.

Not only do elephants live a long time, but they also have the ability to understand fairly abstract and complex ideas, and communicate them to one another. They mourn their dead, and they're able to create music and art.

Being a post-reproductive female myself, I think I'll start calling myself an Elephant Crone!

Done.

In other news, sorry about beating your Bears today. Had to be done if we're going to make the playoffs for the first time in... forever, feels like.
