Reacting to prominent conservative blogger Charles Johnson's announcement that he would not follow the right wing off a cliff, Andrew Sullivan is offering his own reasons for parting with the movement...

Johnson, who blogs at Little Green Footballs, wrote on Monday that fanatic politicians, racism, sexism, anti-Islamism, hate speech, conspiracy theories and other troubling trends on the right wing have led him to make a formal break.

"The American right wing has gone off the rails, into the bushes, and off the cliff," he concluded. "I won't be going over the cliff with them."

Sullivan, though not as consistent a conservative as Johnson, felt compelled to emphasize his own separation from the right wing. Among other things, he writes:
I cannot support a movement that holds that purely religious doctrine should govern civil political decisions and that uses the sacredness of religious faith for the pursuit of worldly power.

I cannot support a movement that is deeply homophobic, cynically deploys fear of homosexuals to win votes, and gives off such a racist vibe that its share of the minority vote remains pitiful.

I cannot support a movement which has no real respect for the institutions of government and is prepared to use any tactic and any means to fight political warfare rather than conduct a political conversation.

Read Sullivan's essay here. Good, honest stuff.

Best Campaign Slogan Ever
Hat-tip Dan Carter...

Larry Sinclair, the man who claimed that he "took drugs and had homo sex with Obama" is now running for Congress in Florida’s 24th district as an "Independent."

His slogan?

"I served my time, now it's time I serve my Country."

Sinclair, author of Barack Obama & Larry Sinclair: Cocaine, Sex, Lies & Murder? and convicted felon, was reportedly offered $10,000 to verify his claims of illicit sex and drug use with then candidate Obama via a polygraph test, which he promptly failed.

But deceit is nothing new for Sinclair. Politico did a bit of digging into his background and found a pattern:
The record includes forgery charges in two states, one of which drew Sinclair a 16-year jail sentence. The Pueblo County, Colo., Sheriff's Office also has an outstanding warrant for Sinclair's arrest for forging an acquaintance's signature and stealing her tax refunds.

Sinclair has been convicted of larceny, theft, check forging and credit card fraud and has served over 16 years in prison in Florida and Colorado where he was disciplined 97 times for infractions including assault, threats, drug possession, intimidation, and verbal abuse. According to law enforcement records, he also has 13 aliases including "LA Rye Vizcarra Avila" and "Mohammed Gahanan."

“It is what it is,” said a Sinclair spokesman regarding his criminal past.

Help Larry get elected here.

Found on Dave Weigel's Twitter:

A new resolution sponsored by (non-elected) Republican National Committee member Jim Bopp (IN) and nine other RNC members aims at preventing future NY-23 disasters by requiring that any and all GOP candidates agree to at least eight of 10 issue promises in order to receive financial support from the RNC...

The resolution would prohibit RNC money from flowing to any candidate who disagrees with more than two itemized planks of the GOP platform (playing off Reagan's maxim that anyone who agreed with him 80% of the time is not 20% an enemy).

The key text:
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Republican National Committee identifies ten (10) key public policy positions for the 2010 election cycle, which the Republican National Committee expects its public officials and candidates to support:

1) We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill;

2) We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare;

3) We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;

4) We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check;

5) We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;

6) We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;

7) We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;

8) We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;

9) We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing and denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and

10) We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership; and be further

RESOLVED, that a candidate who disagrees with three or more of the above stated public policy position of the Republican National Committee, as identified by the voting record, public statements and/or signed questionnaire of the candidate, shall not be eligible for financial support and endorsement by the Republican National Committee.

This is not the first time Bopp has introduced what could prove to be a controversial resolution. Earlier this year, he offered a resolution condemning Obama's agenda as "socialist." Chairman's Steele's allies eventually brokered a compromise that softened the language. Now the language is back, encouraging "Republican solidarity in opposition to Obama's socialist agenda."

When finalized, the resolution will be submitted for discussion at party's semiannual meeting in Hawaii.

Hat-tip Dave Neiwert...

No sooner was the identity of the Fort Hood shooter — Nadal Malik Hasan — released a few hours ago than the wingnuts sprang into predictable action: A jihadi embarking on a murderous terrorism spree!

Pam "Atlas Barks" Geller immediately proclaimed it "an obvious act terrorism" and ran a big, all-cap headline declaring: "IT'S THE JIHAD STUPID." Elsewhere in the right blogosphere, people like the folks at Hot Air jumped all over the "news" that Hasan was a convert to Islam.

Then, Fox News' Shepard Smith interviewed Hasan's cousin, and we found out that the "terrorism" angle was a pile of tripe:
• Hasan was American born and educated, but raised Muslim. He was not a convert.

• He had never previously been deployed to Iraq or anywhere overseas, for that matter. (So much for the theories he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.)

• He had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

• He was reportedly abused regularly by his colleagues for being Muslim — called a "raghead" and other such terms — and had been seeking to get out of the military because the environment had become so hostile.

Another interview (on just before this one) that Smith had with a former colleague of Hasan's indicated that Hasan was prone to making outrageous remarks about Muslims "defending themselves," particularly in reference to last summer's shooting of two military recruiters in Arkansas by a Muslim convert. There are also reports that he had recently been the victim of a hate crime: His car was vandalized, with the word "Allah" scratched into the paint, and he was reportedly extremely upset by it.

It's obviously a terribly complicated and tragic story, and we'd all be well-advised to reserve speculation (and anti-Muslim fervor) as the actual, hard facts continue to emerge.

And no, it's not the Jihad, stupid.

First, watch this mess:

Done laughing (and/or gagging)? Gotta be a parody... an awful YouTube gag video.... right?

OK, now read this altogether frightening fascinating piece - "The Very Separate World of Conservative Republicans" - based on a focus group study conducted by the Democracy Corps.

Seriously, read it all the way through. Thoughts/opinions most welcome (especially from the small handful of right-wingers that read this journal).

Excerpted:
"(I)t was striking how these voters constantly characterized themselves as part of a group of individuals who share a set of beliefs, a unique knowledge, and a commitment of opposition to Obama that sets them apart from the majority of the country [...] They also believe they possess a level of knowledge and understanding gained from a rejection of the mainstream media and an embrace of conservative media and pundits such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, which sets them apart even more.

"Further, they believe this position leaves them with a responsibility to spread the word, to educate those who do not share their insights, and to take back the country that they love [...] confident that their numbers will grow, and that they will ultimately defeat Barack Obama and the shadowy forces driving his hidden agenda.

And yet, remarkably, these voters had virtually nothing positive to say about the Republican Party..."

Well I'll be damned.... it looks like Senator Spineless is good for something, after all...

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today announced that the merged health care bill will include a public option allowing states to opt-out.

"Under this concept, states will be able to determine whether the public option works best for them," Reid told reporters, adding that it was the "fairest" way to go.

Reid said after "countless hours" of talking to his caucus, there is a "strong consensus" for this plan.

"As we've gone through this process, I've concluded, with the support of the White House and Senators. Dodd and Baucus, that the best way to move forward is to include a public option with an opt-out provision for states," Reid said. In the next several hours, he will send the CBO a draft bill with alternative provisions on certain issues, to get a range of cost estimates on the plan he'll bring to the floor.

* * *

Y'know, if this thing actually passes, I can't wait to see which of the Red States opt out first: Texas? Arizona? Oklahoma? South Carolina? Personally, I hope they all do. They'd only put a drain on the public option insurance that I want to be able to afford, anyway.

Of course, as letstatdelc points out, the chances are none of them will — just like when they "refused" to accept federal stimulus funds, then folded like cheap card tables in the end. Just imagine being a Governor or state legislator and trying to sell to your constituents that you're limiting their choice in insurance when other states have more (and better) options. It's an instant political third rail.

Step lightly, wingnuts. ☺

P.S. I'll also be looking forward to seeing all those GOP congress members opposed to a public option give up their own government-run plans. McConnell? Kyl? Chambliss? McCain? Inhofe? Hatch? Let's go, fellas!

Tangipahoa Parish Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell has refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of "concern for any children the couple might have."

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," said Bardwell. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said, having come to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said. "I try to treat everyone equally."

Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.

Texas is no longer the shittiest state in the union...

On Nov. 1st, a law in Oklahoma will go into effect that will collect personal details about every single abortion performed in the state and post them on a public website. Implementing the measure will "cost $281,285 the first year and $256,285 each subsequent year."

Here are the first eight questions that women will have to reveal:
1. Date of abortion

2. County in which abortion performed

3. Age of mother

4. Marital status of mother (married, divorced, separated, widowed, or never married)

5. Race of mother

6. Years of education of mother (specify highest year completed)

7. State or foreign country of residence of mother

8. Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother

• Live Births
• Miscarriages
• Induced Abortions

Although the questionnaire does not ask for name, address, or “any information specifically identifying the patient,” as Feminists for Choice points out, these eight questions could easily be used to identify a woman in a small community.

“They’re really just trying to frighten women out of having abortions,” Keri Parks, director of external affairs at Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, said.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging the law, arguing that “it violates the Oklahoma Constitution because it ‘covers more than one subject’ — a challenge that previously worked to strike down an abortion ultrasound law.”

You just can't make make this shit up...

The wingnuts who attended last Saturday’s Tea Party rally in Washington have found yet another reason to kick and scream: Apparently, they're unhappy with the level of government-subsidized service provided by the DC subway system.

Yes, really.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) has called for a government investigation (presumably to be funded by taxpayers) into whether the public subway system "adequately prepared" for this weekend’s rally to protest government spending and government services.

Brady released a letter he sent to Washington’s Metro system complaining that the taxpayer-funded subway system was unable to properly transport protesters to the rally to protest government spending and expansion.
“These individuals came all the way from Southeast Texas to protest the excessive spending and growing government intrusion by the 111th Congress and the new Obama administration,” Brady wrote. “These participants, whose tax dollars were used to create and maintain this public transit system, were frustrated and disappointed that our nation’s capital did not make a great effort to simply provide a basic level of transit for them.”

A spokesman for Brady says that “there weren’t enough cars and there weren’t enough trains.” Brady tweeted as much from the Saturday march:
“METRO did not prepare for Tea Party March! More stories. People couldn’t get on, missed start of march. I will demand answers from Metro.”

Included in Brady's hissy fit was the allegation that "overcrowding forced an 80-year-old woman and elderly veterans in wheelchairs to pay for cabs," concluding that "it appears that Metro added no additional capacity to its regular weekend schedule.”

So let me get this straight: A pack of 70,000 slack-jawed pinheads - led by Glenn Beck (who didn't even show up) - swarm Washington to protest “socialism,” then turn around and bellyache that the (already underfunded) Metro isn’t providing them enough government service...

I thought tea-baggers were all about self-sufficiency and personal responsibility... so why on Earth should little old ladies and disabled veterans be looked after by The State?

Meet Ohio State Representative and Minority Whip John Adams...

This Republican asshat has re-introduced a bill that would prevent a woman from having an abortion until she gets written consent from the biological father.

As proposed, the bill triggers criminal penalties against women for “providing a false biological father.” Adams says the “first-degree misdemeanor” would be punishable with up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Labeled by Adams as the “Father’s Right Bill,” the lawr would give men the final say on abortion in the state of Ohio:
In the case where the father isn’t known, House Bill 252 would compel the woman to provide a list of names of people who may be the father in an effort to determine paternity. The bill also would make it a crime for women to lie about who the father is, and make it illegal for doctors to perform abortions without the father’s consent.

The bill would also force a woman to have a child if the father does not agree to an abortion.“That child should be born, not killed,” Adams said.

Adams first introduced this offensive piece of garbage legislation back in '07. Already, the bill has at least 15 co-sponsors. No word on instances of rape and incest (would the woman need to get a permission slip from the daddy then, too?).

As Elizabeth Gettelman puts it:
Listen, I get that a father has a vested interest in seeing his progeny thrive, that's a man's most basic evolutionary instinct. But until men have to carry a growing fetus for nine months, sometimes risking their health to do so, and most certainly altering the rest of their lives, until then, the woman has the final say. If she makes the hard decision that abortion is what's best for everyone, well, sorry boys, you're going to have to be live with that. Just like she will.

P.S. Who wants to wager that this misogynist prick is either a closet homosexual or banging someone other than his wife?

In their continuing quest to lose the Hispanic vote for the next hundred years, Republicans have managed to ratchet up the hate in the latest attempt to derail the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

A new TV commerical produced by the wingnuts at the "Committee for Justice" claims that Sotomayor “led a group supporting violent Puerto Rican terrorists,” going so far as to link her to “Obama’s buddy Bill Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist who bombed American buildings in the seventies."

Get a load of this:

The "terrorist" group that these pinheads are referring to? The Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund, a decidedly mainstream civil rights organization on whose board of directors Sotomayor has served. Apparently, in Tea Bag Land, a group that protects Latinos from race discrimination is no different from al Qaeda.

Estas personas no solo so estupidas, si no tambien locas. ☺
